Outlander Season 5, Episode 3 is certainly the creepiest, darkest episode of the series we’ve ever had. The EPs take us Inside the World.

While “Wentworth” is the most traumatizing episode and “Faith” is the most heartbreaking, Outlander Season 5, Episode 3 has become the creepiest and darkest episode of the series ever. Titled “Free Will,” the episode brings a story that will certainly have fans debating. Now the EPs have broken down the episode in the latest Inside the World featurette.

Matt B. Roberts and Maril Davis take us inside the meaning of the title. It’s more than it looks on the surface, which was also the case for “Between Two Fires.” The episode focused the men and women at the Ridge, who do have choices. They’re making them throughout the episode, with Roger and Brianna making their choices to stay and Jamie and Claire having free will to head to the Beardsley house.

At the same time, there’s the focus on the lack of free will. Josiah and Kezzie Beardsley are indentured to Mr. Beardsley. They’ve been indentured since they were toddlers and have lived a hard life because of that. It’s clear that Josiah, at least, would love to remain with the Frasers, but he needs to hope that the Frasers can get his indenture from Beardsley first.

Then there’s Fanny, who hasn’t had any free will. At first, she looks like a woman trying to protect herself but then you realize she’s a woman who is struggling mentally. She’s someone who has found a way to torture her abuser, but does that make things right? Even with her abuser incapacitated, Fanny still feels like she doesn’t have free will.

During the Outlander Season 5, Episode 3 Inside the World, the two also talk about the darkness of the episode. Something the show has never done is shy away from the realities of the time. This is something Diana Gabaldon has never done in her books.

This episode gave the story time to breathe. We got a chance to see Fanny give her explanation, Claire and Jamie debate what to do, and the horrors of the life that Fanny lived with her husband. Then there was the horror that she put him through out of revenge.

It’s not going to be an easy episode to watch. Some will skip it with the next watch through of the season, but it’s an important episode in the development of Jamie and Claire.
