When Outlander Season 1, Episode 3 premiered for the first time, there was a slight dip in the demo. Here’s a look back at the ratings.
Five years ago today, Outlander Season 1, Episode 3 premiered for the first time. Like the previous two episodes, it’s time to look back at the ratings for the episode and what it could have meant for the show.
Episode 3, titled “The Way Out,” saw Claire learn more about the world of the 18th century. It also saw the key demo drop by 22% compared to the previous episode. However, this was still higher than the series premiere.

The great news for the episode is that the total audience increased by 12% to more than one million people watching it, according to TV Series Finale. This was great news for the show, but it also told us one thing. Many of the viewers were the older book readers. After all, the key demo (the 18-49-year-olds) was where the drop occurred.
This demo of the audience wasn’t all that surprising at the time. Outlander has always been one of the lesser-known shows. It’s been clear when the show has made it to bigger platforms worldwide, especially Netflix, because the fanbase has grown considerably.
Younger people who hadn’t read the books when they first came out in 1991 had found out about the series. It was similar to the growth of Game of Thrones after about the third season.
Episode 3 was an important point for the season. The first two episodes introduced the storyline and the characters. It brought us the initial chemistry and the third episode was the chance to delve into the story even more. It’s around this point that a new show can struggle to keep its fans. Seeing an uptick in the total audience was a good sign.
Of course, this was just a small part of the viewership. We’d only get the live + same-day ratings on the STARZ channel. One thing we wouldn’t get would be the views through the app. It’s clear now the app ratings were strong for the show to be picked up for the second season after just the first episode.
