Outlander being on Netflix is more important than an Emmy nom

The Emmy nominations will be announced shortly and Outlander has put forward a number of FYCs. However, the Netflix arrival is more important for the future of the show.

Seeing a favorite TV show get award recognition is important to many fans. There’s outcry every time Outlander or one of the actors is snubbed, whether for a nomination or the win. However, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the Emmy nominations, which are coming up soon, aren’t important for the future of the show. It’s all about Netflix right now.

While it’s great to see the critical success, that doesn’t always translate to viewers. If it did, Outlander would have been one of the most popular shows in the world because it’s already had a number of award nominations, especially Caitriona Balfe.

For the most part, viewers don’t pay too much attention to the awards shows. I know they’ve never interested me. I don’t care what a bunch of people I’ve never met think about a show. If I like it, I’m going to watch it.

What’s more important is that the show is accessible. I need to be able to watch it to check it out in the first place. That’s what Netflix Canada offered me a couple of years ago when it put the first two seasons of the series on the service. I was able to binge-watch the 29 episodes to see what this series (that I’d already heard plenty of good stuff about) was like.

Without it being on Netflix Canada, I probably wouldn’t have given it a chance. After all, there was no other way for me to stream it to check it out and I don’t buy DVDs of a show I’m not sure I’m going to like.

I can say the same for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. This show won a number of awards for its first season but it was only when I got Amazon Prime Video that I even knew about it. The awards for it meant nothing. I watched it because it was there and the short trailers I saw in between other shows that I was watching made me want to know more.

I’m sure there are plenty of other people out there. In fact, there have been many new Sassenachs since the series landed on Netflix in the United States. This has made it possible to grow the fanbase and help STARZ gain more subscribers as people want to catch up with Seasons 3 and 4.

The Emmy Awards really won’t matter. After all, have you really wanted to watch some of the shows that have won just because they’ve clinched the award or because they’ve been nominated? It’s all about accessibility and, right now, putting Outlander on Netflix is the best thing that could have happened for its future.
