Outlander Season 5 is losing a crew member who has been part of the show since the very beginning. And it’s not just any crew member but the assistant director.
Nick Heckstall-Smith has said his goodbyes. The man who has been an assistant director on Outlander since the beginning is stepping away in the middle of Outlander Season 5 filming.
It’s certainly a sad day but he’s going out on positive terms. During the post on social media, Heckstall-Smith shared his love for his “muddy 6 years” and included photos from throughout the seasons — and yes, it’s extremely muddy at the moment! That post was quickly met with past and present cast members wishing him well, including Tobias Menzies and Lauren Lyle.

Fans have also shared their hopes for him in the future. The show is a family to many of the cast and crew members, so it will be hard for all to see him go.
As assistant director, Heckstall-Smith will have seen it all. It’s one of the most important jobs on the set, helping with the day-to-day running and ensuring that all logistics are in order.
He was one of the crucial cogs in the wheel but one of the people who got the least recognition. However, he certainly made an impression with the fandom.
It’s going to be hard to lose him as a member of the Outlander Season 5 crew, but we do wish him all the best. He’s going onto Carnival Row and his time as a Sassenach will certainly help show his commitment to a series.
