4. Claire realizing the reason Jamie broke his promise

I’m glad Outlander didn’t drag this out too much. As Claire mourned the loss of a child, she was also able to be a mother to Fergus. As she screamed in the night, she finally found out what had happened on that day of the duel. She learned just why Jamie had broken his promise.

At no point did she blame Fergus for being in the wrong room or for pickpocketing. No victim blaming here! Never once did she deny that she would have wanted to kill Black Jack Randall for his actions, either. She understood Jamie’s need to protect Fergus, to be a father to him.

There was finally chance that the two could be on the same page. But for me, it was the realization and the willingness to do what it took to get Jamie out of the Bastille that made this such a standout moment.

3. Jamie’s admittance that Claire wasn’t wrong for asking for a year

One of the biggest debates among Sassenachs is whether Claire was right in asking Jamie for a year. I’m on the side that she was and I love that during this episode, Jamie is able to see past his anger. He accepts that she was right. Frank is her family. Despite her choosing Jamie, she still felt like she owed something to Frank — an innocent in all this.

This episode also sees Claire seeing it from the other side, too. She knows that what she asked was too much. However, it wasn’t Jamie’s need for vengeance that fueled him in the duel. It was Fergus’ need for justice. Jamie still knew that he should have kept his promise but he just couldn’t.
