Why Diana Gabaldon is happy Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan are producers
Outlander Season 5 will be the first season with Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan as producers. Diana Gabaldon thinks that this is a good thing.
Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan are producers in Outlander Season 5. While I’ve already looked at why this is exciting, Diana Gabaldon has now shared why she thinks it’s a good thing.
During an interview with Outlander Cast, she shared that as just actors, the two stars have little say. Sure, they can say that they don’t like something but that doesn’t always mean the directors and showrunners will listen. Fortunately, we have seen where the showrunners will listen to Sam Heughan’s take on the character (when he didn’t want to collapse to the floor) but we’ve also seen where the showrunners have said tough.

As producers, they have more creative control. There are still times that the showrunners will make a final decision that isn’t necessarily what the actors like, but at the same time, there’s more chance of them talking about the character decisions before all the writing takes place. As producers, Balfe and Heughan have louder voices for their characters.
This is why the stars have wanted the producer credits. While it can lead to more voices — and too many cooks and all that — the extra voices can be a good thing for the series. It helps to add more creative voices, especially those who are dedicated to the individual characters. Gabaldon certainly believes that this is going to be the case for Outlander Season 5.
It’s always been clear that the actors want to do what is right for the characters. There are times they haven’t really been happy with a scene or a line and have been vocal about it. Now it’s time for them to have a little more soul.
