Things behind the scenes of Outlander are changing slightly. Could they change further with Caitriona Balfe directing an episode of Outlander Season 5 or 6?

Caitriona Balfe is looking at stretching her talents and abilities. She’s started working on some writing projects and one of those she wants to direct. Could Outlander Season 5 be one of the places to gain some experience directing?

It would certainly make sense. She already knows the cast and crew, so stepping behind the camera won’t be too daunting for her. The cast and crew also know her, so will already know some of her quirks, her cues, and her style. This could help get her comfortable behind the camera and figure out the best way to direct actors.

Plus, if her script she’s working on is a movie, directing an episode for TV would be a good place to start. It’s shorter, requiring less planning and time. As she gains experience in TV, she’ll have more confidence stepping into the world of movies.

It’s not like she’d be the first actor to start directing on her own show, either. Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles has taken a turn behind the camera a few times. The Vampire Diaries saw Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder turn to directing. Grey’s AnatomyNCIS, and other major primetime dramas and comedies have also see their stars head behind the camera. It seems to be the natural way to do things, partially for the familiarity but also to gain experience quickly.

Balfe opting for Outlander Season 5 as her directorial debut wouldn’t mean she’d have to step away from the screen, either, if that’s what fans are worried about. Supernatural‘s Richard Speight Jr. directed an episode where he had to play opposite himself. Okay, he’s had more experience, but it shows the possibilities. If Balfe wanted to take a step back, it could be an episode that focuses more on Jamie, Brianna, or even Roger, instead of focusing on Claire.
