Outlander Season 5: Why is there such a long Droughtlander?

The point of renewing Outlander before the Season 4 premiere was to prevent a long Droughtlander. However, that hasn’t happened. Why is that?

STARZ has wanted to avoid these long Droughtlanders. The point of renewing Outlander for Seasons 5 and 6 before the fourth season premiere was to prevent a long break between the seasons. However, that didn’t happen.

The current speculation for Season 5 is late 2019 to early 2020. The latter date is the most likely, especially since filming doesn’t start until this month. And why has there been such a delay? Why do we have this long Droughtlander? We can thank the delay in the renewal.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Caitriona Balfe explained that the renewal didn’t come in early enough. The good thing about the renewal for two seasons was that the writers have had time to breathe and expand the story. Instead of fitting one book into one season, there’s now the chance to expand some storylines into future seasons. However, the renewal didn’t come in enough time to set up schedules.

In a way, the delay has been a good thing. The filming won’t start until after most of the bad weather in Scotland. This can help to prevent pushing filming back and make filming more comfortable. However, an earlier renewal could have allowed filming to take place during the summer.

By the time the renewal came through, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe both had projects to work on. Their filming schedules needed to be worked around.

It’s possible that we’ll get a Droughtlander similar to the one between Seasons 2 and 3. However, the Droughtlander between Seasons 5 and 6 should be more like the most recent one. Hopefully, STARZ will learn from this and decide to renew sooner in the future.
