4. Friendliness with Lord John Grey

At the very end of the episode, it’s time for Lord John Grey to move on. Claire has a smile on her face, as the two clearly said everything they needed to each other. With the truth out, Claire was able to see a part of herself in Lord John.

In a way, their lives have mirrored each other. John wasn’t completely satisfied with Isobel but stayed with her out of duty. Meanwhile, Claire stayed with Frank out of duty. She finally understood John’s need to see Jamie but the pain he feels each time.

And that was clear at the very end. Seeing her smile warmly at him as she bid him farewell was beautiful.

3. Trying to find a middle ground

Claire knows how the Revolutionary War is going to go. She knows the buildup is happening and the dinner table really shouldn’t be a place for politics. As Lord John and Murtagh found themselves at opposite ends of a spectrum, Claire tried to find some sort of middle ground to keep the peace.

It was clear she knew she had to toe the line, but that didn’t mean she was happy about it. She wanted to stand up for Murtagh but knew that she would have to be on the British’s side at some point in it.

While we got a woman that stood up for her beliefs, she was also one that managed to play peacekeeper of sorts. I’ve been waiting for this part of her character to shine through for a long time and I’m glad to see it at the dinner table.
