Amazon Channels may be how half of STARZ subscribers are watching Outlander
The STARZ app is certainly how the majority of Outlander viewers catch the episodes. Half of those STARZ subscribers may come from Amazon Channels.
While the Outlander live viewing figures have hit a low after the success of the third season, we know this isn’t too much cause for concern. After all, many viewers watch directly through the STARZ app, and these figures aren’t tracked by Nielsen. It turns out that half of those STARZ subscribers could be coming through Amazon Channels.
According to CNET, BMO analyst Daniel Salmon estimates that 47% of STARZ subscribers actually watch through Amazon Channels. And it definitely makes sense, when you also consider that 35% of HBO subscribers and 37% of SHOWTIME subscribers possibly sign up in the same way.

STARZ viewers through Amazon Channels is the least surprising of all. The company launched the app via Amazon Channels before offering its standalone app. Considering both are the same price, why switch out from an all-in-one Amazon payment to multiple payments to different companies at various times of the month?
This isn’t a bad thing for STARZ either. The company is still getting eyeballs on its app and Amazon Channels clearly proved that app subscriptions are worth it.
What it does mean is that the Live + Same Day ratings are never going to be accurate. STARZ releases the likes of Outlander at midnight on its service and the Nielsen figures don’t take those viewing figures into account. Simply put, Nielsen is an outdated method of tracking views for platforms like STARZ, but it’s still nice to see a live-viewing boost.
