Matt B. Roberts and Maril Davis take us behind the episode in this Outlander Season 4, Episode 1 featurette. It’s a chance to share more of the challenge they faced to turn Scotland into Carolina.
This was more than just getting the landscape right. Fortunately, Scotland and the Carolinas have some similarities in their looks, especially when you get into the forests. The team needed to make buildings and clothing look just right.

With a costume master like Terry Dresbach behind the outfits, there was nothing to worry about when it came to the costumes. She puts the effort in to make sure outfits are perfect for the time period. They don’t just look beautiful and stylish, but like they belong for this particular time, including repurposing costumes for different needs.
Davis shares that the costumes are in a different material. While the Scots used woolen clothing because it was warmer and cheaper to source locally, those in the Colonies, especially North Carolina, used linens and thinner materials, They needed something that would help them withstand the heat!

What about the sets? Jon Gary Steele is another master that the Outlander production team owe a lot to. Roberts shares more about creating the sets and the differences between Scotland and the Colonies. I’ll let you watch the video to find out more.
What is clear is that there was a discussion. The team needed to make sure they could turn Scotland into the Colonies before they decided to do anything. It’s no wonder there was a lot of production work before filming.
