Outlander Season 4 debuted to lower viewing figures compared to last season. Is that really a cause for concern? Let’s look at the details.

Outlander Season 4, Episode 1 debuted to figures that were lower than the third season. This isn’t necessarily a cause for concern, as it doesn’t mean fewer people watched the episode. It all depends on the number of people who watched through the app.

TV Series Finale reports 1.082 million people watched the episode and it gained a rating of 0.21 in the demo. This means a drop of 27.53% and 32.26% respectively from the previous season’s premiere.

It’s worth noting that these figures are the live + same day ratings. It’s impossible to say what the STARZ App ratings are because the company doesn’t release that information. We also don’t get the figures for those who watch later in the week. Views during the week can be used to help determine the fate of a show.

More from Outlander News

The great news is the viewing figures right now aren’t that much of a concern. Firstly, Outlander has already been renewed for two more seasons. Secondly, while the ratings are lower than the third season premiere, they only take into account the people who watched live through the STARZ network.

These figures don’t include international viewings, the app views throughout the day, or any later figures, so they’re just a small proportion of the figures that STARZ will look at. And it’s the app viewings that will be more important for the network. STARZ will want to see the number of people who start the season and then those who watch all the way through.

There’s more good news. The ratings are about on par is Outlander‘s second season. Still need more good news? They’re higher than the ratings for the pilot episode of the series. In fact, the Outlander Season 4 ratings aren’t too far off some of the episodes in the first season and the ratings from that led to the show being renewed for two seasons.

Finally, it’s worth noting that STARZ did things differently this year. There were two screenings of the episode, once at NYCC and the next at the Savannah Film Festival. People may have decided to skip watching the episode live because they’d already seen what happened. It will be interesting to see what Sunday’s figures are like.

So, with all that, I don’t think there’s cause for concern. It would be good to see the ratings higher, but we have no idea how many people are watching through the app or through other tracked and legal methods.
