4. Giving Hayes what he needed in the end

Hayes was ready to die. Well, sort of. He was ready to face his fate and, maybe, he felt some guilt for the death of the husband of the woman he’d slept with. Regardless, Hayes didn’t want to put his friends at risk, so he made it clear that he would meet his maker.

All he wanted was to make sure there was a friendly face smiling at him. He wanted to leave the world with one positive thought, and that’s something he knew Jamie would be able to honor.

And Jamie certainly did. As the drums rolled, Jamie pushed his way to the front. Through his grief, he made sure there was a smile — although it was more of a grimace — to give Hayes the last sight he needed. Once more, we got the loyalty.

3. Acknowledging the horror of the Native Americans

While Claire and Jamie talk about the American Dream, Jamie wants to know about the Natives. He’s always been thoughtful of others and it’s clear that he feels something for the Native Americans. After all, Claire pointed out that what had happened to the Natives was something similar to what had happened to the Highlanders after Culloden.

After initially thinking of the dream, Jamie learns more about the darkness of the Colonies past. He realizes that everything happening right now is a nightmare for the original inhabitants.

This foreshadows the nightmare that Claire and Jamie go through at the end, but it also shows that side to Jamie we saw when the two discussed slavery. He is a man ahead of his time who thinks about others, even those who are different.
