Nielsen collects data from the social media platforms to help networks determine how popular their shows are. How can you get Outlander Season 4 trending? Here’s all you need to know.

You’ve likely seen trending hashtags on Twitter and Instagram. Facebook has them too, but they’re not as popular. However, Nielsen looks at the data for all three. This market research company collects the number of mentions to help networks determine whether to renew a show or not and see how popular it is online and you can help for Outlander Season 4.

Of course, STARZ has already renewed Outlander for two more seasons. But you want to keep proving that there is a need for Claire and Jamie’s journey to see it all the way through to the end of the 10th and final book. So, what can you do to help the social media hashtag trend?

This gives you a complete breakdown of the hashtag to use and how to use it on each of the sites.

Remember the timing

More from Outlander Fandom

The first thing to remember is when to use the hashtag. Nielsen collects the data three hours before an episode starts, during the episode, and for three hours after the episode airs. You’ve got a seven-hour window to get this show trending on all accounts.

This is based on your timezone and is only for those in the United States.

However, if you are outside of the country, you can still get your mentions to count. They just need to be retweeted or shared by those in the United States! You can also get into conversations and encourage everyone around you to use the hashtags. Let Nielsen deal with figuring out who is based in the U.S. or not.

Twitter is the easiest

Let’s start with Twitter because it’s the easiest and the oldest for Nielsen’s data. Use #Outlander whenever you write a tweet. During the seven-hour period, make sure #Outlander is one of your first two hashtags in use. It can be included with anything else but it needs to be one of the first two hashtags.

The second hashtag will often be the name of the episode. This keeps things in order for fans, so they can use the two terms and find out what everyone is saying. It’s also going to be how the Outlander writers keep their tweets in order when discussing a particular episode.

Whether you’re retweeting (quote retweet as much as possible), replying, or just tweeting your own thoughts and images, make sure it’s done with the #Outlander hashtag.

Instagram is the next easiest

Interaction on Instagram is the way to make sure your hashtags are included. I’m not sure if the hashtag has to be one of the first two like Twitter, but it never hurts to make sure its the first one or two, right?

#Outlander is the one to use again. Reply to photos shared whether from the official site/actors or from other fans. Share your own images with the hashtag. Be social!

The more social you are on the site, the more counts the hashtag will get.

Because of how easy it is to reply to lots and use the hashtag, Instagram can often really push the number of mentions up.

Facebook for those who prefer it

Then it comes to Facebook. Make sure you mark that you’re watching Outlander. Then you can start replying to others. You want to make sure the posts you share and the people you reply to are all public, otherwise Nielsen can’t count you.

If you don’t want to make your own Facebook posts public (I get that), then reply to the official Outlander site. Look out for other Outlander pages that are chatting and find out groups that are public.

This is the harder of the three to make work, so Instagram and Twitter are my go-tos.
