12. Claire tells Jamie the truth

When it happened: Season 1, Episode 11

Any tension between Claire and Jamie? There was a little tension. Jamie didn’t know whether to believe Claire was a witch or not and Claire was nervous of telling him the full truth.

Why it’s the best: Claire and Jamie always had the promise of secrets but no lies. The idea was that they would always have things that they’d want to keep to themselves at first, but they would never openly lie to each other. Jamie knew that Claire was hiding things and she’d tell him in due course.

When it came to the time traveling secret, Claire had the chance to open up after her witch trial ordeal. Jamie raced in to save her and that was certainly a swoon-worthy moment, but the best moment was the reveal of the truth.

Claire was nervous, visibly and understandably so. She had no idea how Jamie would take her confession, knowing that she could be viewed as a witch. However, he sat and listened. He trusted her and took her for her word.

This was a slight change from the books where he didn’t fully believe her until seeing her disappear through the stones, and to me, this is what made this scene better. He showed he was willing to trust—he didn’t need to see to believe.
