13. Claire pulls Jamie out of his dark place

When it happened: Season 1, Episode 16

Any tension between Claire and Jamie? There was plenty of tension, as Claire forced Jamie to talk about his ordeal at Wentworth Prison.

Why it’s the best: It certainly wasn’t surprising to see Jamie in such a dark place when at the abbey. He’d been through a living nightmare in Wentworth Prison and had gone through it all knowing that death was going to happen.

And then that death didn’t happen. He didn’t get an out from everything he’d been through and was now in a suicidal place, not caring that it was a mortal sin. Nobody could pull him out of it. Nobody but Claire.

After initially trying to coax him out of it, she decided to fight fire with fire. She made him feel and made him talk. While he may not have wanted to tell her everything that he went through, she made sure that she was the sounding board. Hearing about it wouldn’t hurt her delicate ears and it would do Jamie the world of good.

This wasn’t an instant moment of recovery for Jamie, but it brought the two together. We saw that Claire was more than willing to fight for her man (something we’d seen when she risked it all to go into Wentworth Prison in the first place) and that she would go to hell and back with him, both physically and mentally. This relationship definitely wasn’t one-sided.
