This week in Outlander history saw the first airing of two episodes. One of those is the special episode The Wedding. The other is one from Season 3, Surrender.
We’ve already looked at Outlander history once this week. On Thursday, I threw you back to the beautiful episode, “The Wedding.” The one that brought Claire and Jamie together officially, although not necessarily for all the best reasons.
Outlander Season 3 also had an episode air for the first time in this week in history. Episode 2, “Surrender,” aired for the first time on Sept. 17, 2017.
Yes, this time last year, we were two episodes into the third season and we’re still waiting around for the fourth. Granted, Droughtlander hasn’t been as long as the one between the second and third season, but it’s still not been that easy.

As I’ve already looked at “The Wedding,” I’m going to jump straight into “Surrender.” This episode is a beautiful episode of the second season, continuing this 20 years of separation between Claire and Jamie.
Jamie is stuck in Lallybroch, living in secrecy. There’s that terrible moment when Fergus loses his hands because of the horrible Redcoats and Jamie sees it all. Fortunately, Jamie was there to be able to get Fergus back to safety and mended so he doesn’t also lose his life, but it’s in that moment that Jamie realizes he can’t live in secret anymore.
I remember watching the trailer for Outlander Season 3 and wondering why Jenny would even consider turning Jamie in (remember, I’m a show-first fan with some spoilerly knowledge). This episode finally explained it. I could understand Jenny’s emotions and felt for her as she made this almost-impossible decision.
As for Claire, she was stuck navigating an unhappy marriage. There looked to be some hope for Claire and Frank by the end of the premiere episode. However, it was clear the hope couldn’t last. Frank and Claire were vastly different people to the ones they were before Claire literally fell through time.
In this episode, we got glimpses of Claire’s life as a new mother. She saw Jamie’s ghost everywhere. However, this was also the moment she decided to step up and become a doctor.
