On this day in Outlander history: The Garrison Commander aired
The Garrison Commander aired for the first time on this day in Outlander history. Here’s a look back at the episode and what it meant for fans at the time.
Outlander Season 1, Episode 6 aired for the first time on Sept. 13, 2014. It came a year and two days after Caitriona Balfe was cast in the role of Claire and now we couldn’t imagine anyone other than her in the role. “The Garrison Commander” certainly needed a woman who could portray different emotions and feelings easily, after all.
The start of the episode picked up where the last left off. Lieutenant Jeremy Foster seemingly “rescued” Claire from the MacKenzie men. I do believe he always thought he was doing what was right, assuming that this Englishwoman was being held prisoner by the Scottish Highlanders. Considering the argument he heard in the village and the way the men became defensive that wasn’t a bad assumption to make.

In the end, he put Claire in the hands of the one person nobody wanted her to being the hands of: Black Jack Randall. Of course, Jeremy was never to know this would happen. He didn’t intentionally put her in a room with just Randall there and he wouldn’t have been able to do anything to help her anyway since Randall was a captain and Jeremy was just a lieutenant.
Regardless, Jeremy’s actions led to Claire being in a room with Randall and ended up with the threat of Claire being imprisoned, left to rot, and possibly worse in Fort William (or wherever else she may have ended up). “The Garrison Commander” was just one episode away from Claire and Jamie being married in the event of the season.
