Will Murtagh’s return in Outlander Season 4 work for the series?
Murtagh was a surprise save in Outlander Season 3. As we get closer to the Outlander Season 4 premiere date, it’s time to look at whether his character in the series will still work.
Outlander Season 3 was meant to be the last for Murtagh. In the novels, he died at Culloden and that was it. To Diana Gabaldon, the character is dead and that’s the way he stays. However, Murtagh was saved and now there’s a chance we’ll see him in Outlander Season 4.
Of course, everyone is being careful of spoilers behind the scenes. The Daily Express reports that Toni Graphia hinted that Murtagh wouldn’t even appear in the fourth season, but spoiler photos shared by fans on Twitter show him possibly in the Colonies with Claire and Jamie Fraser at some point.

The showrunners are going to leave us guessing and it wasn’t an outright no. When talking to Diana Gabaldon, she admitted that she’d seen most of the fourth season and said what they did with Murtagh worked.
This isn’t an outright statement that he will be physically in the series. There could just be a mention of what he’s doing now. All Diana said was that she’d seen most of the fourth season and “it’ll be alright.”
It would be odd not to bring Murtagh into it in some way. Even just an episode to see where he is now would make more sense than just ignoring him completely. Murtagh was a major part of the first two seasons and the character developed in a bigger way than in the books. That was the reason Ron D. Moore chose to save him.
Of course, everything would need to fit into the season organically. One of the issues with changing one element is that lots of other elements need to change in the future. It’s a butterfly effect, a little like what could have happened had Claire succeeded at changing history.
