The trail through the jungle

As much as we question why we watched Claire trail through the jungle alone, this is a moment to focus on. It gave us Balfe in her element, showing the various stages of survival. We watched as she tried to find shelter, food, and water. There was the fear of the unknown, the despair of finding rotten coconuts, and that need to survive.

The more I watch these scenes, the more I see the beauty in the acting and the directing. There was certainly a need for this and Balfe deserves an Emmy for being able to show so much with few lines and little connection with the human race.

Other moments that sell it

Of course, there are a few other moments throughout Outlander Season 3 that show us Balfe deserves the Emmy nod. We got the humor when she tried to manipulate the priest to let her leave and there was the comfort and advice she offered Marsali on her wedding night. We can’t forget the way she fought with the guilt of leaving her daughter behind in the 20th century and the fight she put up as Geillis threatened to kill Brianna.

Then there’s the start of the season, as Claire struggles with the anger towards and loss of Jamie. She tries to cope anyway she can, stuck in a marriage that she’s not entirely happy with in a time that she doesn’t quite want to be. It’s not easy to show depression on TV and the Outlander Season 3 premiere proves that, but looking at it from that point of view shows the beauty in Balfe’s acting.

All in all, this was a strong year for Balfe and she needs the recognition because of it.
