A number of Outlander-focused locations in Scotland have been damaged over the years. The Clan Fraser headstone at Culloden Battlefield is the latest to be closed for repairs.
Various historic locations around Scotland have been closed from tourists. Others have had extra security added to protect them. Many of these are all locations linking to Outlander, whether through the books or the filming locations for the series. The Clan Fraser headstone at Culloden Battlefield is the latest location to go through a period of closure.
The ground around the headstone is starting to wear away. Part of this is due to the foot traffic, as Outlander fans gather around the infamous headstone, but it’s also due to poor weather and natural erosion.

Clan Fraser’s (and all other clans’) headstone is protected by the Historic Environment Scotland by law, so National Trust for Scotland had to apply to carry out the repair work. The headstone will be roped off for a short time, allowing for the repairs and preventing any further damage due to the foot traffic. It comes just before the 272nd anniversary of the Battle of Culloden.

After the repair work, which involves reseeding the grass, the area will be reopened to tourists. However, there will be recurrent closures during bad weather to help protect the ground. It’s the cold and wet weather (which Scotland is well-known for) that has caused the foot traffic damage to be so bad.
Despite the damage to the area, interim property manager at the battlefield, Katey Boal, doesn’t have anything negative to say about the tourism. In fact, she’s grateful for the extra exposure of the battlefield due to the Outlander novels and series. The history from the novel and series is just the tip of the iceberg and visiting Culloden Battlefield will allow people to learn the deeper truths and avoid the myths.

However, there are many requests for all visitors to take more respect around the historical sites. Culloden is a burial place for the clansmen that fell during the battle.
