Cesar Domboy turns 28 today. We know him best as Fergus Claudel Fraser.
To celebrate Cesar Domboy’s 28th birthday, it’s time to look at the character that has stolen our hearts. He plays the adult version of Fergus Claudel Fraser and absolutely nobody can forget that sweet, loving smile at his wedding when Jamie officially gave Fergus his name. He is now officially a Fraser.
Fergus was once an orphan, living in a brothel with no hope for the future. That changed when he met Jamie Fraser and started working for him. He didn’t just get work, but he found a home; loving adoptive parents and a family who brought him in. Even when he lost his hand (protecting Jamie’s hideout), nobody turned their backs on him.
The loyal and loving

Fergus has always repaid the kindness and open hearts of Jamie, Claire, Jenny, Ian and more. He remained loyal to Jamie, moving from France to Scotland, fighting alongside him at Prestonpans (although Jamie and Claire didn’t know at the time) and protecting the family when they needed it the most.
When Jamie asked for Fergus to keep a secret, he did, even though he didn’t want to. He even considered putting his life in danger to help the Frasers.
The only time he’s not done as Jamie asked was when it came to mutiny on the Artemis. Fergus put Marsali first, making it clear that he knows what love is and he would do anything to protect those he loves from harm.
The orphan who found a family
Family don’t end with blood. That’s actually a line from Supernatural, but it is prevalent in Outlander. Fergus was just an orphan but quickly found a family through Jamie and Claire. He was devasted at Claire’s presumed death, with a shocked happiness when she returned.
Fergus found a family. He found a home in the Frasers and that has grown ever since. What originally started as a business relationship became one of love and happiness. Sure he lost a hand, but that deepened that connection with the family.
However, he never presumed. While he thought of Jamie as a father and Claire as a mother, he never presumed that he was one of them. At his wedding, he had a look of gratitude, shock, happiness, and longingness rolled into one. It was a beautiful moment to see him get pulled into this family officially–and full credit to the amazing acting of Cesar Domboy in this moment.
Domboy didn’t have to say a word. We could see every single emotion on his face; something very few actors can done to the extent he did.
His family is growing now that he has a wife. Those who have read the books will know just how much that family grows and some of the ups and downs that come with that. It will be interesting to see all that play out on-screen on Outlander, with Domboy bringing this character further to life.
From child to adult
It’s never easy for a new actor to take over a character. That was a necessity in Outlander, as Fergus went from the pre-teen orphan in Paris to the caring 30-something in Scotland. Romann Berrux stole our hearts as young Fergus and, admittedly, I was worried about seeing the change. Domboy instantly made it clear there was no need to worry.

As sad as it was to say goodbye to Berrux, Domboy has embodied everything the younger actor developed first. It is easy to believe that it’s the same character just 20 years older. Domboy made it easy to accept this change, as he built upon the younger version of the character yet still made the adult version his own.

Happy birthday, Cesar. Thank you for bringing us adult Fergus to life and here’s to many more years of Outlander and Fergus Claudel Fraser.
