He used to be a rugby player
McGinlay has only been acting since 2015, after being scouted in 2013. That isn’t something to worry about though, considering his collection of TV shows and movies to his name. But what did he do before he was an actor?
Well, he played rugby and that certainly explains his body! The only reason he had to leave the game was due to an injury, so he became a fitness trainer after this. He and Sam Heughan will certainly have plenty to talk about off set, considering Heughan loves training and helping others become better at fitness too!
He’s done period dramas before
If you’re worried about someone portraying the period right, you don’t need to fear. One of McGinlay’s latest characters has been in The History Channel’s Knightfall. He played Aldred in Episode 2, “Find Us the Grail.”
He has also taken on the larger role of Percival in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The Guy Richie production starred Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, and Eric Bana. Considering McGinlay only started acting a few years ago, this shows his talent straight away.
Guy Richie offered him the role of Percival
McGinlay didn’t even have to audition for the role of Sir Percival in King Arthur. He’d already worked with Guy Richie on a Haig whisky commercial of all things. That led to Richie realizing how great he was at acting and how he would make the perfect Percival, so he was offered the role.
He grew up in Glasgow
McGinlay is born and bred in Scotland. More specifically, he’s from Paisley, to the west of Glasgow. This will be useful for his character, Andrew MacNeill, as he’s a prominent member of the Scottish community within Cape Fear. At least the accent will be genuine, which is more than can be said for a few of the other actors who have appeared on the series.
There are a number of other projects in the works
As if Outlander wasn’t enough, McGinlay has a number of other projects in the works. Many of them are now in post-production, but some are still to be filmed. They all tend to have a period battle feel, with one of them being focused on the Scottish clans.
One of his projects he’s producing. Tellurian is currently filming and he is producer and actor. He will also be in a documentary looking at the filming of “The Fairy Flag,” according to IMDb.
