Matthew B. Roberts says that Outlander isn’t a romance, but Jamie and Claire’s love story.

Have you ever referred to Outlander as a romance? You’re not alone. However, showrunner Matt Roberts doesn’t believe the story is a romance at all. It’s a love story and there is a big difference between the two.

A romance usually has a big, romantic ending. The two protagonists find their way to each other and that’s it. While readers will make up stories afterwards, the canon story doesn’t have to move on. There’s no need to tell the aftermath, as it’s a case of “they all lived happily ever after” and all the other fairy tale nonsense.

With Claire and Jamie, fans continually tune in to learn about their next adventure. This makes it a love story. There’s a beginning, middle, and end but the end isn’t where the two fall in love. After all, the two fell in love part way through the first season (and the first book that the show was adapted from) and the story continued.

Fans have watched Claire and Jamie fall in love, lose each other and find one another again. They’ve been to Hell and back; somewhat literally.

Outlander season 4 will continue this idea of a love story. The Frasers completed their latest mission but have now washed upon America’s shores. Season 4 will see the Frasers find a home together and build a new life together. It’s time for the big American dream.

Of course, there will be twists and turns along the way. Even those who haven’t read the fourth book, “Drums of Autumn,” will know there is excitement ahead. There’s going to be a pirate called Stephen Bonnet, Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta, and Brianna and Roger will crop up at some point. If Claire and Jamie thought their lives could get boring then they were sadly mistaken.

One of the benefits of the show (and books) being a love story is that it’s more realistic. Life doesn’t end when two people fall in love. That’s just the end of the current storyline. There’s more excitement and tribulations to face. Claire and Jamie have proven that, but they’ve also proven that love can always win out; it is possible to find your way back to your soul mate.

Roberts isn’t the only person to save Outlander isn’t a romance. Author of the novels, Diana Gabaldon, has regularly said that she never considered her series a romance series. Sure there is love there, but it’s a time travel story; a science-fiction story. It’s much bigger than just a period romance.
