Outlander season 4 is currently in production with writing taking place over the holiday season, but does that include book author Diana Gabaldon?
There are so many rumors and questions circulating about Outlander season 4. The season is currently in production and MattB. Roberts shared that the writers would be getting ahead with the scripts over the holiday season. However, as rumors circulated about novel author, Diana Gabaldon, stepping back from consulting on the series, so did questions about her involvement in writing the season.
Gabaldon is definitely not stepping back as a consultant. She will still be there to share her opinions and thoughts on the scripts. She’s already given her input in the first four episodes, and seen the latest drafts of episodes 5 and 6.

As for writing, the answer is no: she’s definitely not involved in the actual writing of the season and won’t be taking up an episode. This isn’t out of the ordinary. She didn’t write an episode in season 1 or 3 either.
Gabaldon wrote the script for Outlander season 2, episode 11, “Vengeance is Mine.” It was her first TV script and she certainly had fun doing it. However, script writing takes up a lot of time and she will is still working on Book 9 of the whole series, “Go Tell the Bees that I Am Gone.” While Gabaldon says that it won’t be released in 2017, it may be released by the end of 2018. She doesn’t have a set date for publication just yet.
There is also another book planned after this, which is likely going to be the end of the series. This will be the book that gives the details of that ghostly figure Frank saw in the first book (and pilot episode of the series), who is definitely Jamie Fraser.
Gabaldon says that she may write an episode of season 5 if it is picked up. The pickup for the new season is looking likely, especially considering the overall viewing figures for season 3. Sony and Starz are currently in negotiations to help limit the Droughtlander between seasons 4 and 5.
