Did Geillis really need a sacrifice to travel through time on Outlander?
Claire made it clear to Geillis that she never needed a sacrifice to pass through the stones in the Outlander season 3 finale.
In Outlander season 2, Claire, Brianna, and Roger watched Geillis go through the stones of Craig da Dun and through time. Claire knew exactly where Geillis was heading and had tried to stop her to tell her about the witch trials. In the season 3 finale, Geillis learned that it was Claire shouting to her, but Geillis had already gone through. Geillis also learns that Claire has never needed a sacrifice the multiple times she has passed through time.
Yet Geillis still considers to use Young Ian as a sacrifice. After all her research she is certain that Geillis needed the blood of a person to go through the portals. Yet in an interview with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning, Caitriona Balfe hinted that Geillis didn’t need the sacrifices at all.

There was certainly an evil side to Geillis. She wasn’t afraid to use dark magic and power to get her way. All she wanted was the rightful King of Scotland to sit on the throne. An independent Scotland was her dream and what she believed was her cause to see through to the end. If that meant deaths, then so be it.
In the end, Geillis looked like she was going to jump through the portal without a sacrifice. While she thought she needed it, she was going to take Claire’s word for it. This would suggest that she didn’t actually need the sacrifice, but just thought she did.
Geillis would rather sacrifice a person instead of testing the portal without one first. This suggests that part of her just wanted to use the sacrifice, making her look scarier and more powerful than she really was. After all, there was nothing to lose trying without the sacrifice first!
