5 best moments in the Outlander season 3 finale
The Outlander season 3 finale may have brought up Droughtlander, but it also brought us some exciting moments.
While many book fans have found Outlander season 3 disappointing, I’ve found it riveting. It held my attention a lot more than the second season (I personally found the overall Paris storyline boring) and I enjoyed the character developments. The season 3 finale has been no exception. Storylines were wrapped in a way that made sense and was acceptable for me as a long-standing historical romance fan.
There were certain moments that stood out more than others. Whether they were funny, important, dramatic, or intriguing, they pulled me in and made it impossible to tweet while watching. These are the top five moments from the Outlander season 3 finale.

#1. Lord John dressing down Lieutenant/Captain Leonard
Captain Leonard desperately wanted to arrest Jamie. After all, he’s a career man and needs to prove himself worthy of his commission. But he didn’t follow protocol and that meant a dressing down from Lord John.
However, it wasn’t the fact that Lord John was able to wipe the smug look off Captain Leonard’s face. It was the dig towards the Navy and commenting on the way Leonard got his rank. With military experience and knowledge of this long-standing rivalry between the Army and the Navy, this was an extremely funny moment and made me love Lord John even more.
Plus it was all a believable way to get Jamie out of the arrest. Lieutenant/Captain Leonard (depending on the side you’re on) didn’t have authority over Lord John to make the arrest and Lord John is in a higher position overall to get the warrant completely thrown out in Scotland.
#2. Geillis’ lack of trust in Claire’s story
It’s not surprising Geillis has no idea about Brianna. She just didn’t know that Claire had been back to the future. In fact, Geillis had no idea that it was possible to get through the stones without a sacrifice to do it.
Geillis’ lack of trust in Claire was the icing on the cake for Geillis’ overall storyline. Coming from the future, she had to adapt to the ways of the land. That also meant being suspicious of almost everyone she came across, especially a fellow time traveller. Geillis says she’s never met another one, so believed everything she knew to be true.
This was a moment that showed more of Geillis’ personality. It showed her fear and passion at the same time. Fans got to see the drive and determination, while also watching as she tried to remain one step ahead of her enemies.
#3. Yi Tien Cho telling Claire and Jamie his plans
If there’s one storyline I would have liked to see more of, it was Yi Tien Cho’s. I wanted to see more of him falling for Margaret, and her falling for him. However, the love-at-first-sight storyline was certainly believable considering the characters that had been created within the show.
One of the sweetest moments in the episode was Yi Tien Cho telling Claire and Jamie about his plans with Margaret. It wrapped their storyline up perfectly. Fans now know where he is and that he’s happy and in love. Considering how likeable he became, that’s an important ending to the character.
#4. Claire’s shock at killing Geillis
Outlander fans knew it had to happen, but it was perfect to see it all play out. Those bones Joe had shown Claire before she returned to the past came full circle. Claire was the one not to just break Geillis’ neck, but almost take it clean off.
But it wasn’t the scenes in the cave or the fight that were the best moments. It was Claire’s reaction at the end. She was shaking, as she just stared at the machete. This was a woman in total shock, as she remembered the bones and the things Joe had told her. She realized that she was the reason for those bones being there in the Jamaican cave.
The shock was also important, as it connected back to season 1. This brings me to the final best moment, which is actually a collection of moments.
#5. All the reminders of previous seasons
There were numerous reminders of previous seasons throughout the episode, but the best ones came towards the end. One of those was as Claire watched the Voodoo sacrificial ritual from the bushes. She was reminded of the dance at the stones, the pagan ritual she watched from the bushes with the stones. This was something hinted at with the opening credits, but only became extremely clear in the finale.
Then there was the link to Claire’s first kill. She had been filled with shock when she took the life of a soldier. Now she took the life of someone she once considered a friend.
And there were reminders of season 2 and early season 3. The battle between Claire and Geillis was almost like the battle between Jamie and Black Jack Randall in Paris and in the season 3 premiere. And Margaret brought up reminders of the season 3 premiere for both Claire and Jamie. Finally, the rabbit was mentioned yet again, bringing an end to the season 3’s theme of rabbits.
