There are just four episodes left of Season 3, making it the best time to look into the details of Outlander Season 4.
It won’t be long until Droughtlander returns. The good news is this time won’t be as long as last. Outlander Season 4 is already confirmed and filming is currently underway in Scotland. While there isn’t a confirmed air date from Starz, the season will likely return sometime in September 2018, marking the year from when Season 3 premiered.
With that in mind, it’s time to look at some of the details of the next season. Here’s a look at everything known about it so far.
Based on Drums of Autumn
It shouldn’t be that much of a surprise to hear that Outlander Season 4 will be based on the fourth book in the Outlander series, “Drums of Autumn.” That means the storyline can already (mostly) be guessed.

No major spoilers here for those who haven’t read the book yet. However, there will be names of characters returning and appearing for the first time if you choose to read on!
The theme of the season is “home,” according to Entertainment Weekly. That’s understandable considering the book storyline. Matthew B. Roberts explains that the Frasers have never had a place to call their own that was safe for them, but they will find that in Season 4.
Brianna and Roger will return
Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin have both been on the Outlander Season 4 set, which means they are returning to the show. They will reprise their roles of Brianna Randall Fraser and Roger MacKenzie Wakefield.
For those who haven’t read the books, there will be questions about how they return. Will they be in the past or will fans see storylines based on the present day? Lallybroch does come into it, along with a letter from Frank. That’s all the spoilers you get for now!
Maria Doyle Kennedy and Ed Speelers joining the cast
Just recently, Outlander announced two new actors were joining the cast of the series. Marie Doyle Kennedy (well known for The Tudors and Orphan Black) will join the cast as Jacosta, Jamie’s aunt on his mother’s side. Ed Speelers (best known for Downton Abbey) will join as the English pirate Stephen Bonnet.
Sharing much about their characters will give away some major spoilers. However, expect Claire and Jamie to both interact with the new characters, along with many others.
Tobias Menzies may reprise his role(s)
While “Drums of Autumn” doesn’t include any mention of Frank or Black Jack Randall, Tobias Menzies can’t be ruled out for Season 4 just yet. Showrunner Roberts has said that they are currently exploring the opportunity to bring Menzies back into the show.
But didn’t both characters die? Well, flashbacks are always a possibility, especially with a certain storyline for Brianna.
Expect more Fergus and Marsali
If you enjoyed the snippet of Fergus and Marsali in the most recent episode, you will be happy to hear that the two return for Season 4. They will also return for more of Season 3!
Cesar Domboy and Lauren Lyle have been on set for Season 4. Will this be a problem for Claire and Jamie moving forward? Can Marsali and Claire learn to get along?
Talk of the American Revolutionary War will come up
Since Claire knows of the things to come, it’s not surprising that talk of the American Revolutionary War will come up. This may be more than a decade away in the show’s time, but Claire will constantly think about the battles to come and what they could mean for her family.
Will she attempt to stop the American Revolutionary War from happening as she did with Culloden? Does her knowledge of it help them secure victory sooner? Will the war start earlier? You’ll have to either read the book or wait for the season to find out.
Anne Kenney leaving the writing team
Anne Kenney is beloved by Outlander fans for her adaptation of “The Wedding” in Season 1. However, she will not return to the series for Season 4. The writer shared on Twitter that “Voyager” would be her last Outlander series adaptation.
This may be a bone of contention for many book fans. There have been complaints over recent adaptation of parts of the book. There are many new writers joining for Seasons 3 and 4.
