While Claire had her annoying moments in Outlander Season 3, Episode 9, she also had some excellent ones. Who didn’t love her out-sassing Marsali?

Claire has had a rough time in the Outlander world. After believing her husband was dead for 20 years, she finally left her daughter to be reunited with him. There were some beautiful moments, but things haven’t been easy. Trouble easily finds her, especially when it comes to Lallybroch and the Fraser/Murray clan. The kidnap of Young Ian left to Claire and Jamie setting sail on the Artemis to Jamaica to find him.

While it’s easy to pick faults, it’s sometimes difficult to find the positives. This piece is going to change that. These are definitely Claire’s best moments from Outlander’s “The Doldrums.”

#1. Claire out-sassing Marsali

It was never going to be easy for Claire with Jamie’s (sort of) stepdaughter onboard the Artemis. However, Jamie made it harder for her. To prevent Marsali and Fergus consummating their handfasting, he opted to put Marsali and Claire in a cabin together. Of course, Claire wasn’t happy about it, but she was left without a choice.

More from Claire and Jamie

Rather than just put up with the digs from Marsali, Claire shot her down in style. She chose not to argue with Marsali and just let her believe her opinion was right. This could have easily spiraled out of control, but Claire was the more mature person (as she should be in her late 40s!).

#2. Attempting to help Marsali and Fergus

Despite her dislike for Laoghaire’s daughter, Claire decided that maybe Marsali and Fergus should be allowed to be together. She tried to take Jamie aside and encourage him to allow it. It was the way she explained why they should allow it that gives her this moment.

Claire didn’t just argue that she wanted to share a cabin with her husband. She decided to use a little bit of her parenting skills. Continually being told no would just push Fergus and Marsali together. If they allowed them to be together, they may get over this phase. Jamie was having none of it, though!

#3. Connecting with Mr. Willoughby

Up until this point, Mr. Willoughby hadn’t really met a woman who was kind and thoughtful to him. It’s not that surprising hearing his story that he called Claire Jamie’s honorable wife.

During the episode, Claire showed an interest in Mr. Willoughby’s artwork and his story. She wanted to know more and not just to take her mind off situations. Mr. Willoughby has almost become the Murtagh of Outlander Season 3—loosely considering the two are nothing alike in personality.

But why was this such a good moment? It reminded fans that she can be kind and interested in other cultures. She never once questioned his opinions or beliefs, accepting that they were from another world.

#4. Learning Jamie’s cure for seasickness

Claire tries to help cure Jamie’s seasickness through ginger tea. For weeks she believes that the cure is working, only to walk in on Mr. Willoughby attempting acupuncture on him. This has been what’s helped.

Rather than be angry at Jamie’s deception, she found it funny. She was just happy that he was feeling better, despite it not being through one of her methods.

#5. Admitting she misses Brianna

Many fans have wondered why Claire would just leave Brianna behind in the 20th century. They’ve also been disappointed that Claire and Jamie seem to have forgotten all about their daughter. That wasn’t the case in “The Doldrums.” Claire opened up to Jamie about missing Brianna. It was a sweet moment.

It turns out this moment should have been a little longer and included a discussion about Willie. There’s no point arguing over whether that scene should have been in or not. Getting this moment of sadness and honesty was just important for Claire’s character.

#6. Agreeing to treat the sick

When the British ship rolls up, Claire fears that they will attempt to bring any and all British subjects onboard (as is their right). It turns out that the ship is full of disease and the captain needs a surgeon. Rather than argue, Claire steps forward and offers her skills. She is able to quickly diagnose the condition without even seeing it.

The old Claire returns in this episode. She has always put herself at risk to treat the sick, like in Paris when she checked to see if one of the men from the Comte’s ships had smallpox.
