In the world of rom-coms, the two main characters get together. It’s time to break down the ending to You’re Cordially Invited.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from You’re Cordially Invited on Prime Video.

The new Prime Video movie stars Reese Witherspoon as reality TV producer Margot and single father Jim. The two plan weddings for their sister and daughter respectively, and both end up choosing the same date at a venue that can only handle one wedding per weekend.

Of course, hilarity ensues. The question is how You're Cordially Invited ends up being a rom-com for the two main characters.

It’s more comedy than rom-com in You’re Cordially Invited

To be honest, this movie is more comedy than romantic comedy. It’s only toward the end that we see a romance blossom between Jim and Margot. In fact, that romance didn’t even need to be there, because the movie has a lot more going for it.

There is a lot of focus on family and avoiding repeating generational problems. Margot is pretty estranged from her family. She only sees them for big events since moving to LA, and they never come to visit her. However, a heart-to-heart with her mom reveals that her mom has never been out because Margot has never invited her, and Margot doesn’t come back home more often because her mom doesn’t invite her. This certainly shows a big problem with some families, because when it comes to my relationship with my parents, we don’t invite each other. We just say “how about we come visit on X date?”

Margot’s mom does admit that she didn’t want to be too critical of her daughters like her mother was with her. However, that’s exactly how she’s become. There’s a need to change, and she admits that she does need to do that. So, by the end of the movie, we see a family that attempts to reconnect.

Meanwhile, Jim and his daughter’s relationship is a little too incestuous at times. Jim has latched onto his daughter after his wife’s death. He lives for her, and she’s still a child in his eyes because of that. Along with unhealthy boundaries, we also find out that he lies to her because he doesn’t want to break her heart. Telling her that her mom died when she was six broken him, and he can’t do it again.

After Jenni initially storms out, the two do end up repairing their relationship. It’s Margot who helps Jim and Jenni repair the damage.

Do the weddings work out in You’re Cordially Invited?

While both couples end up getting married, only one makes it through more than 24 hours. We find out that Margot’s sister and brother-in-law are still together around a year later. The credit shots show them together with their baby—Margot’s sister was pregnant at the wedding.

Jenni and Oliver didn’t make it work. After an initial thought that Oliver was cheating on Jenni with a bridesmaid—it was someone else—the two left and got their marriage annulled online. They made a huge TikTok video to show it, but it turned out that that was all for the followers.

Oliver and Jenni are still together and living together. They do agree that they were too young to get married, though. They’re not going through with it again just yet.

Do Margot and Jim get together in You’re Cordially Invited?

The two who just want their loved ones to have the perfect wedding realize that they made mistakes along the way. They have also constantly lived for other people or hidden away what they really want. By the end of the movie, the two realize that they may be each other’s people.

Jim helps Margot find a way to remember all of her cousin’s names, while Margot helps Jim be more honest with his daughter and set some boundaries. The two share a kiss, and we find that they’re together through the credit scenes.

I just don’t think the movie needed this part. All the other messages were so much more important—although, I do think that Davey needs to learn some boundaries!

You’re Cordially Invited is now available to stream on Prime Video.
