Who is Totìs in the Outlander books?

When it comes to the Outlander books, there is far more that goes on than the Outlander TV show is able to give us. That means there are far more characters who make it into the pages. However, sometimes, we’re just a little bit behind the show, and this is one of those cases.

In the latest Daily Lines for A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, we meet a young boy called Totìs, who rushes to Claire to get help for his Papa, who has a broken leg. While the book’s excerpt doesn’t go into who Papa is, we know it’s someone linked to Jamie. In fact, it only takes reading Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone to know who Totìs is.

Totìs is Swiftest of Lizards in the Outlander books

We have actually met who Totìs is in the books in the Outlander TV series. During Outlander season 7, Young Ian came across Emily, his former Mohawk wife, who shared that there is a boy who is Young Ian’s son. In the show, she asked Young Ian to give this boy his English name, as she had already given him his Mohawk name.

In the Outlander books, the events are slightly different, in that Young Ian gives the boy his Mohawk name. Then in Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, Emily comes to Young Ian in the hope that he will raise the boy, Swiftest of Lizards. That is who Totìs is.

There is a lot more nuance to the story, and I urge you to read the Outlander books if you haven’t, but this is a quick rundown as to who Totìs is and how he becomes part of the Fraser family. It seems he quickly settles in with the family, and a few years have past, as Hunter — Young Ian and Rachel’s son, who Emily names — is old enough for Totìs to tell him to remain in a particular place in a later Daily Lines interaction. This and the upbringing Totìs would have had explains why he’d likely fit right in with the Fraser family.

Will we see Totìs in Outlander season 8?

We have met Totìs, but will we see him again? This isn’t an easy question to answer, but I am leaning on the side of no. There are only 10 episodes to Outlander season 8, and there’s still a lot to wrap up. With Young Ian and Rachel still really only just starting out their journey together as a married couple, I’m not sure there’s time to cover everything that happens with them throughout Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone and then wrap up the story in the 10 episodes.

Outlander has managed to prove me wrong in the past. By introducing Totìs in Outlander season 7 and having Young Ian give him his English name — and, as we've mentioned at claireandjamie.com before, let's not forget the confirmation that this boy is Young Ian’s biologically in the TV series — there is a glimmer of hope that we’ll see something.

Outlander season 8 premieres on Friday, March 6 on STARZ.
