When it comes to watching a show within the Game of Thrones universe, you need to know the timeline. After all, this helps to understand whether dragons are around and which family is sitting on the Iron Throne.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the next show in the universe to come out, following the stories of Dunk and Egg. It’s set in between both House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, and while there will be names that ring a bell, we won’t see the same characters pop up.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms time period

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set in 209 AC. It focuses on what is known as the Ashford Tournament, which is mentioned in The Hedge Knight series of books.

That tells us little, right? When it comes to House of the Dragon, the series is set around 70 or 80 years after the events. That show is slated to end around 130 AC, just to give you an idea, and it means that dragons are still in the living memory of some people, but the majority of them have only heard about dragons.

As for Game of Thrones, there’s still a long time to go before the Baratheon line takes over the Iron Throne. Game of Thrones is set in 298 AC, which is around 90 years from when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place.

Who is sitting on the Iron Throne on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

It is often easier to figure out who is on the Iron Throne. During A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we’ll start with King Daeron II Targaryen on the throne, who is the great-grandson of Rhaenyra Targaryen. We pick up shortly after the First Blackfyre Rebellion, with Dunk trying to prove himself as a hedge knight so that he can become Ser Duncan the Tall.

Along his journey he meets Egg, who becomes his squire. However, there is a secret Egg likes to keep from people, and that is that he’s Prince Aegon, who will later become Aegon V. Aegon is the grandson of King Daemon, who is considered unlikely to become King of the Seven Kingdoms considering he is the youngest of the boys.

There is very little chance of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms catching up to the Game of Thrones timeline, but we will get to see small connections to stories that we were told in the past.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on Sunday, Jan. 18 on HBO and HBO Max.
