After falling through the stones looking for Julia, Henry Beauchamp quickly found himself in a fight for survival. He landed himself with an important job in Blood of My Blood episode 2.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 2.
While holidaying in the Highlands, Henry and Julia find themselves thrown through time and into the past. They are separated, with Julia not even sure if Henry has come to the past for her, and Henry heading to a tavern to find help.
Instead, Henry almost finds himself thrown down a well, but Malcolm Grant is impressed with his observations. That leads to him being taken to Isaac Grant.

Henry becomes the Grants bladier in Blood of My Blood
After hearing about Henry’s observations of the grants being formed, Isaac realizes that Henry has a good head on his shoulders. However, he wants to know why his own bladier didn’t see the problems with the deeds. Well, it turns out his own bladier wasn’t someone to be trusted.
Henry ends up being offered the job of bladier, and at first, he doesn’t want to take it. Of course, he doesn’t have to, but Isaac points out that the Highlands are dangerous for an Englishman. Knowing what that means, Henry decides that the job is safer and he can still look for Julia.

What is a bladier?
The term isn’t one commonly used in TV shows. In fact, it’s not used in Outlander, but there is a bladier shown. Ned Gowan is the bladier to the MacKenzie clan, but he doesn’t usually go by that title.
A bladier is an advisor. Henry ended up with the role because he was observant of the paperwork and offered Malcolm his advice without even being paid for it. This is the type of man the Grants need, especially when they know they can keep him in line with threats of danger with him being English.
The bladier can also be the spokesman of the clan, which we see Henry acting as now and then. Ned Gowen also acts as this for the MacKenzie clan on multiple occasions. In other words, Henry is able to negotiate for Clan Grant, and he will offer his advice to Isaac (and later Malcolm) when it comes to their input being needed. He will always do what is right for the clan. At least, he should. Henry has heard what happens when he doesn’t.
