We head back to Le Comte St. Germain’s story in The Space Between section 26. In this section, Master Raymond returns.

There is a lot of mystery surrounding Master Raymond. We know that he’s also a time traveler, and Diana Gabaldon has explained that he is pre-historic in terms of age. Le Comte St. Germain is just as confused about this mas as we are, and answers aren’t going to come easy.

Breaking down The Space Between section 26

Le Comte St. Germain heads to Notre Dame Cathedral, which has an eery sense to it. As he walks into the Cathedral, he listens to the stones to see what they have to say, but they’re not speaking to him. However, he does see a blue light, which immediately frightens him. He then believes that he feels something in the stones.

The more I think about this chapter, the more I wonder if Notre Dame is a portal. It would make some sense, as Master Raymond clearly likes to spend some time in Paris based on a few things in this section. He is sure to know more of where the portals are and understand the magic behind them. He even notes in this section that the Cathedral stones speak and also move slowly.

Master Raymond appears, looking younger than the last time Le Comte saw him. He now has darker hair and all of his teeth. Le Comte has been worried about aging as a time traveler, so this is naturally something that he looks at. He wants to know if a person can reverse the signs of aging, and it looks like they can.

Raymond explains to Le Comte that he is in Paris looking for a “lost daughter,” and he refers to le Comte as “son.” It’s clear that he views himself as the father of time travel, and all those who have come after him are his children. I think this links back to the fact that there’s a genetic component to time travel.

Le Comte has a lot of questions, but he focuses on one that is important to him personally. Why did Raymond not actually kill him, which we can presume was when Claire “poisoned” him and Raymond switched things out. Raymond explains that he simply wanted Le Comte out of the way for a time, but not permanently. Le Comte was a threat to Claire, and he couldn’t have that.

With that, Raymond leaves, leaving Le Comte and us with far more questions than answers.

Could this section be used in a TV series?

If The Space Between was adapted, we would need this section. There is so much mystery to it, and it connects so much to Outlander. From the beginning of the short story, Le Comte has wanted to talk to Master Raymond, and now he gets that chance.

There’s also a lot to take in between the lines. Master Raymond is getting younger, and the stones of the Cathedral talk. This is the type of section that deepens the universe as a whole, so it would need to be included.
