A short tease of Outlander Book 10 puts Young Ian in a spot of bother

Every now and then, we get some teases of the Outlander books. Diana Gabaldon does what she calls her Daily Lines, and some of these extracts can be large, and others are just a quick read to get us ready for what’s to come in the entire novel.

The never include any major spoilers. What we often get to see is how the family is coping and where they are in terms of location — after all, they all tend to end up on the move from Fraser’s Ridge. Blessing for a Warrior Going Out is the 10th and final book in the main series, and now we have another small tease of things to come. This time, it’s all about Young Ian.

Young Ian needs Claire’s help in A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out

The excerpt starts with Totìs rushing to Claire. For those who don’t remember, Totìs joined the family during Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, and he is Young Ian’s son with Emily, his wife from the Mohawk tribe. Well, sort of his son. Emily said that she believes Totìs has Young Ian’s spirit, and she believes that they conceived him together, but there is no DNA testing at the time to confirm this.

We have met this young boy in the Outlander TV series, where it is made more definitive that he is Young Ian’s son. However, in the books, Gabaldon has purposely left it vague. To Totìs and Young Ian, they are father and son, and in this extract, we see Totìs calling Young Ian “Papa” and Jamie “Grand-da.”

In the snippet, Totìs needs Claire’s help, as his Papa has fallen and broken his leg. It’s clearly an emergency, and Claire quickly stops everything that she is doing and rushes out to get to Young Ian, Jamie, and William.

This suggests why Claire doesn’t help William and Jamie get Lord John Grey in Outlander Book 10

There have been many questions since a couple of previous excerpts about why Claire is initially getting ready to go with Jamie and William to save Lord John Grey from his predicament at the end of Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, and why she stays at Fraser’s Ridge. It looks like this is the reason.

Just before this excerpt, we got one that involved the bit that comes after this, which is available on Reddit. William and Jamie are with Young Ian by the creek, where he has fallen. Sure enough, Ian has broken his leg, and it’s a serious compound fracture. Claire also notes that he has broken ribs, but they aren’t as immediate an issue.

The fracture in the leg turns out to be much bigger than just one compound fracture. As Claire looks through the injuries, she can see there are at least three breaks. Of course, she is going to stay home to care for her patient who needs her, while Jamie and William head out to save Lord John Grey.

Outlander Book 10 is currently in progress.
