With Outlander coming to an end in 2026, we’re all starting to prepare ourselves. We know that final seasons can be rough, whether we’ve loved every minute of a show or had a love-hate relationship with it. It’s not easy to end an epic series, and the Outlander team have their work cut out for them.
Of course, the Outlander stars are sharing a few teases of what’s to come. Claireandjamie.com already look at how Sophie Skelton recently shared that there were multiple endings shot, making it difficult to tell how the story will come to a close. This could be why another Outlander star has a surprise confession.

Nobody knows how Outlander will end
The only people to know the ending of this epic romantic time-travel series are the writers, showrunners, and EPs. There’s even a chance that some of them don’t quite know the full ending, with just Matt B. Roberts certain of the ending that will happen.
Sam Heughan shared a surprising confession with PEOPLE. It turns out that he and the other actors don’t really know how it will all come to an end. They will have to wait for that cut to be sent to them so that they can watch it.
"We don't really know how it ends," he tells PEOPLE. "We kind of know, but we shall see in the edit ourselves."
What he did say is that there is “war and eternity.” Is it possible that we’ll see something similar to 1883, which saw Isobel May’s character, Elsa Dutton, go off to the heaven she envisioned, leading her back to Sam? Is heaven for Claire and Jamie just the two of them?

Outlander season 8 will deviate from the books
Heughan did go on to warn everyone that there will be a deviation from the books, and that’s purely because the 10th book in the series isn’t out yet. Everyone involved in the show has warned us that this season will not wrap up the storyline from the books, with most of the story being from the ninth book, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.
That book ends on a major cliffhanger, so the writers of the show will have needed to wrap up their story. It deviates from the story Diana Gabaldon is telling, but Heughan believes that it’s a rewarding ending for the series. He’s happy with it, and he hopes that everyone watching will be happy with it as well.
“Obviously, we didn't finish the books. We had to finish our show, so it is a departure from the books in some ways, but for us it was rewarding, and we wanted to finish it right.”
Of course, not everyone can enjoy the same thing. The world would be boring if that was the case. I will forever say that I like the Ether storyline on Outlander season 6, while so many others hate it. There are some book storylines that I don’t like at all, while others will rave about them. It’s all a matter of taste, and that’s okay!
What I will say is that it is hard to end a series. Game of Thrones and Supernatural both struggled with it, while Six Feet Under and M*A*S*H* got so much right that they remain favorite series finales for many. There’s plenty of debate about Dexter, and it just depends on what you wanted, expected, or believed would be the right ending. With all that in mind, we need to go into Outlander with an open mind to see how it all ends.
Outlander season 8 premieres on Friday, March 6 on STARZ.
