With the end of one season comes questions about the next. In some good news, The Couple Next Door season 2 is happening. In some bad news, it doesn’t look like Sam Heughan will be part of it.
The renewal came through before the first season premiered on STARZ. The series got its debuted at the end of 2023 in the UK. Shortly after that, Channel 4 confirmed that there would be more to the series, but it wouldn’t necessarily be more to this story.
The Couple Next Door is more of an anthology series
According to Deadline, production has moved to Belgium. Nashville’s Sam Palladio will take on the male lead role, and he’s joined by Annabel Scholey, Aggy K Adams, and Sendhil Ramamurthy.
The only actor confirmed returning from the first season is Hugh Dennis. What’s not clear is whether Dennis will take on the same role as before. With the way the first season ended, this is unlikely. We’ll probably see The Couple Next Door turn more into an anthology series, where it focuses on the same themes as the first season.
The Couple Next Door season 1 left some questions though
The downside is that the first season finale left us with a few questions. There are clearly places for the story to go. What happens to Becka and Danny after all the events of the first season? Can their marriage survive Danny’s infidelity and involvement with a mob boss?
What about Pete and Evie? With everything that’s happened, would Pete be able to stand by his wife? After all, isn’t it “for better or for worse?” Is this where the “for worse” comes into play?
It looks like we won’t get to see what comes next. This is potentially a good thing. The series was initially set as a one-season story. There’s a clear beginning, middle, and end. When stories then look for ways to expand, they tend to fail and lose traction. With the decision to move onto a new story, there’s a chance to bring the same thrills as the first season with a new set of couples.
