Things have gradually been getting worse for Pete and Evie since they moved into their new home in The Couple Next Door. Has it reached a boiling point?

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for The Couple Next Door season 1, episode 4.

In the latest episode, we catch up on the aftermath of the spa weekend away. While Evie and Danny enjoyed their night, Becka and Pete didn’t do anything. Becka decides that she wants to talk to Pete about it, and that’s where they both learn that Evie gamed the situation.

Now Evie is pregnant. She didn’t tell Pete, but she did tell her sister. That’s led to Pete finding out, and he knows that it’s not going to be his baby. With all the IVF they did and Pete knowing that his swimmers aren’t the fastest, it all points to Danny being the father of this baby.

Evie isn’t interested in her marriage in The Couple Next Door

There isn’t really any hope in the marriage succeeding at this point, and it’s got nothing to do with Pete. It doesn’t even have anything to do with Danny at this point. Evie and Danny’s relationship hasn’t turned into what I thought initially it would.

Danny is interested in Evie, but only within the set rules that he and Becka have for their open marriage. He is also only interested if Pete is as well. Both parties in the couple have to be on board, and Pete isn’t.

That hasn’t stopped Evie’s obsession, though. That obsession has slowly been growing, and as her mental health is seeing a decline, so is her decision making.

She’s simply not interested in her marriage anymore, and my heart breaks for Pete because of that. Pete wants to save things, but it takes two people to save the marriage. If Evie’s out, she’s out.

Pete needs to walk away for his own mental state

I also don’t agree with couples staying together after infidelity. Sure, the night at the spa was consensual and everyone knew what was going on. That’s not the infidelity that I’m talking about. It’s all about Evie’s clear interest in Danny.

Keeping the pregnancy from Pete is also a step too far. There is a slim chance that the baby could be Pete’s, even though we all know it’s not. Evie had a duty to tell him that she was pregnant as soon as she found out. She also has a duty to tell Danny and Becka considering it’s clearly Danny’s baby.

Once the trust is gone, it’s gone. There’s never a way to fully gain it back. There’s always that thought at the back of the mind that it’s going to happen again. I say this from experience. It doesn’t matter how secure you are in yourself, once there has been that betrayal in a marriage, there’s so very little to save it.

Pete spent one night going through old photos of him and Evie. He loves her, but it’s going to destroy his mental health. Sure, he could encourage Evie getting the mental health help that she needs, but is she really going to do that? Probably not. So, he needs out of this marriage before it does a number on him.
