When the Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1 finale started, it was clear a wedding would happen. However, we knew it couldn’t be the MacKenzie-Grant wedding expected. In the end, the reveal wasn’t too much of a surprise, but it was a lot of fun.

We knew that Ellen and Malcolm couldn’t get married. The Outlander story was always that Brian and Ellen ran away at a Gathering back in 1715, and while the exact location changed, we knew that their escape from Castle Leoch had to be as a monumental moment.
And it was. It was just before Ellen’s wedding to Malcolm, meaning that there was trouble for the MacKenzies. As usual, Colum had a plan to fall back on.
Dougal and Maura got married in Outlander: Blood of My Blood
In the end, we learned that it wasn’t Ellen walking down the aisle at the start of the Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1 finale. Instead, Maura Grant was the bride, with Dougal MacKenzie her husband. No, the wedding wasn’t all that much of a surprise, but it did turn out to be a fun moment.

After all, it’s clear that neither Dougal nor Maura really wanted this to happen. Yet, they both know their parts to play. They need to do what is best for both of their clans, and this is it.
Then the bedroom scene was the icing on the cake. Maura’s matter-of-fact way is exactly what Dougal needed in this moment, and it did help to bring something different to the Outlander universe when it comes to weddings and the act of consummation.
We can see the connection Dougal and Maura can end up having
While Maura was never seen in Outlander, she was mentioned. In fact, we saw how Dougal reacted when he learned that Maura had died. It’s clear that while he had affairs, he was a man who loved his wife in some sort of way, and that’s what we can see happening in Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
Maura is unlike any woman Dougal has been with in the past, and this stands out to him. In fact, it’s almost like there is a level of understanding for Maura as she sees the type of man Dougal is when she goes looking for her maid, Hetty. It makes me look forward to Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 2 to see how this relationship progresses, especially with what we know about Dougal and Letitia.
