In some disappointing news, Amazon has canceled My Lady Jane. The first season finale of the alternate history series will now be a series finale.

The decision came in late on Friday, Aug. 16. It’s the latest cancellation decisions by the network, with a lot of shows now ending abruptly after one or two seasons. It continues the decision for viewers not to watch new shows in fear of abrupt cancellations, which will lead to more cancellations on the networks.

Why My Lady Jane was likely canceled

Amazon didn’t give an exact reason for the cancellation of My Lady Jane, but this one likely comes down to money. After all, there was nothing controversial about the series. While the show performed well with fans, there likely weren’t enough eyeballs on the series when it originally dropped.

Looking at some of the comments with the news, it does seem like not enough people watched it. A lot of people didn’t even know about the series until the cancellation news comes in. This suggests that Amazon has a problem in promoting new shows. If I’m honest, there are some shows I only know about because I’m purposely looking for the news rather than happening to come across trailers in the way that I used to.

Another big problem is the binge-watch release. With the entire series dropping at once, people need to know that it’s being released. If they don’t, they can go months without knowing about it. This then leads to people not watching it, because they’ve found out it’s been canceled. What’s the point in watching something that ends abruptly?

Does the My Lady Jane ending work?

In some sort of good news, the My Lady Jane Season 1 finale does somewhat work as a series finale. We get to see Lady Jane and Guildford Dudley has a happily ever after ending of sorts.

It’s just that the narrator told us that the story wasn’t over. There was clearly more to come, although there isn’t the source material to work with after that. Maybe it’s a good thing since we know what can happen to shows when they run out of source material!
