Who is Davina Porter in Outlander: Blood of My Blood?
The world of Outlander: Blood of My Blood continues to grow. The most recent casting has opened up a discussion about a particular character, though. It’s all about Davina Porter.
Many Outlander fans will recognize the name, but not because of content within the books. Davina Porter is the name of the audiobook narrator. And yes, the character by Diana Gabaldon was named in honor of the narrator.
Davina is an important character for the world of Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Without her, there wouldn’t be one half of one of the love stories.
Davina Porter is Brian’s mother in Outlander: Blood of My Blood
As Starz shared, the character is Brian’s mother. She and Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat had some sort of affair while she was the kitchenmaid at the house. She also looked after the Dowager Lady Lovat.
Very little is know about Davina. In fact, she’s not even mentioned in any of the books. It’s only in The Outlandish Companion that we get to hear more about this character and the name was given. All Jamie shares with Claire is that The Old Fox is his grandfather and Brian was an illegitimate son.
We do have a birth year. That is 1691.
After that, nothing else is known. Davina has died by the time Jamie and Claire get to Simon Lovat’s place to ask for troops. It’s not clear when that happened and whether Jamie even knew his grandmother.
Brian is not the only illegitimate child, either. There is another one listed, called Alexander Fraser, who was the son of Simon and Kate McBryan. Those are the only two children out of wedlock Simon acknowledge, but there is a chance there were more out there.
Adding Brian’s mother into the Outlander prequel
It makes sense to bring Davina into the story. This is a story about Brian and Ellen’s relationship. They weren’t supposed to marry each other. While Ellen’s father didn’t force her to marry someone she wasn’t interested in, it’s not clear if he would have ever let her marry someone like Brian.
Let’s face it, being illegitimate was a huge problem back then. It meant no ability to inherit lands and title, and there was a social stigma attached to it.
We’d need to see some sort of interaction with Brian and his parents. It would make sense to see the way Brian is with both his mother and father, who would have had very different parenting styles. And let’s not forget that Davina wouldn’t have had the respect that Simon’s wife would have had.
This extra casting has made me even more excited for Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
