What year is THEM: Covenant set in?

If you’re looking for another period drama and you’re into horror, THEM is a series to check out. The first season, THEM: Covenant, takes us back to the 1950s.

This is a visual horror series on Prime Video. It doesn’t shy away from the horrors of people, and it really hones into the gore. It’s one of those shows that was called “torture porn” by some due to the graphic nature of some of the scenes. If you have a weaker stomach, this isn’t a series for you.

However, it does tell an important story of race, culture, and society. It also brings up the idea that you’re not always safe inside your home, and what do you do when that’s supposed to be the safest place in your life?

When is THEM: Covenant set?

The first season is set in 1953. A Black family moves to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles County. Considering the year and the demographic, you can likely tell what this family is going to face.

The family has already faced horrific torture. We learn what they went through before they moved—an event that made them want to start over. We also learn that there is something sinister in their home. Their personalities change, and they realize that something is targeting them—and it’s not their neighbors.

There is an episode set in the 1860s. It’s shortly after the Civil War, and a Black couple is looking for a place to live and work. They come across a white community, and we get a sense of where this sinister spirit grew leading to the attack on the Black family in 1953.

There is a side storyline that involves one of the white neighbors, Betty, and her stalker. That’s just a small part of everything else going on throughout the series.
