Next week, we start Lord John and the Private Matter in our Outlander Book Club. This is the first main book in the series about the English character.

Just what is the book about? It’s important to get an idea of the type of storyline to expect. This is much shorter than the main Outlander books, but it is still packed with character development and dramatic stories for Lord John.

Let’s take a look at what to expect as we read through the novel.

Lord John and the Private Matter is set in 1757

The year is 1757 in this book. That puts it shortly after the events of Lord John and the Hellfire Club. It also puts it in the middle of the events in Voyager.

Lord John Grey has returned from exile in Scotland. Ardsmuir Prison has closed down and the majority of inmates have been sent to the colonies as indentured servants. That is except Jamie Fraser, who Lord John Grey arranged to be paroled at Helwater.

What to expect in the first Lord John novel

The novel sees Lord John Grey in turmoil after leaving London’s Beefsteak Club. He has witnessed something shocking, an dhe knows that he needs to find a way to avoid a scandal.

As he does that, the Crown needs his help. There’s a brutal murder of a comrade in arms, and Lord John Grey has been given the task of figuring it out. The murder victim may have also been a traitor, which makes the case all the more important and tricky to solve.

We have seen Lord John solve a murder before. Although, he isn’t all that trained in figuring out the murder. Why wouldn’t the Crown appoint a member of the police to figuring this one out? You’ll understand more as you delve into the book.

I can’t wait to get started with this one. It brings us more development for Lord John Grey, and we learn a few more details about why he was sent to Scotland in the first place. We also get to know Hal a little more.
