World War II dramas remain popular options for storytelling. We Were the Lucky Ones is the latest to arrive, and the first three episodes are now available to stream on Hulu.
The series is based on the book of the same name by Georgia Hunter. It’s also loosely based on her own family’s story, with Addy Kurc taking the role that her grandfather had during World War II. This is a harrowing tale of one Polish Jewish family doing whatever it takes to survive and reunite after the War.
You’ll certainly want to jump into the series right away. It’s also one of those that you may consider for your children as you keep the memory of the persecution of the Jews alive. Now the question is why We Were the Lucky Ones is rated TV-MA.
We Were the Lucky Ones could work for teenagers
This is a series that brings up a lot of real history. There is the show of the violence that the Nazis did against the Jews. There are moments that are scary and intense, and it’s mostly because of all that that the series has been rated TV-MA.
There is a little bit of nudity as well. However, the main focus is on what one family has to do to survive. They are separated by the War, and they will do whatever they can to get back to each other.
As it’s a story set in 1940s Europe, there is some drinking and smoking as well. Smoking didn’t have the same health warnings as it does now. Neither did drinking. To keep the story as authentic as possible, smoking and drinking are needed in the story.
This is one of those shows that you’ll want to watch yourself. I’d say it would work for older teenagers, but I do think this topic is so important to keep alive.
