It turns out that the world of espionage is a small place. Jamie Fraser recognizes Minnie Grey in The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 8.

This chapter furthers Minnie’s storyline, but not directly. I love learning more about her, and I have to wonder at what point her whole story comes out. This is the first time I’m reading The Scottish Prisoner, so I have no way of predicting how it goes.

We do get a catch up on everything that happened between Hal and Jamie. This is important, even for those who read Voyager first.

Breaking down The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 8

Jamie is able to settle down a little, as Hal fetches for some whiskey. However, he’s shocked to see someone else in the house: Minnie Grey. He remembers Minnie as a young girl passing notes between himself and her father. It seems like she was on the opposite side in the Jacobite rebellion, and I do get a sense of foreshadowing for Benjamin Grey’s storyline in Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.

Minnie asks that Jamie say nothing right now. It does sound like this may come out later, but not just yet.

Hal wants to know if Jamie believes Hal owes him a debt and if Jamie still wishes that Hal shot him at Culloden. Jamie makes it clear that there is no debt to be paid. It allows for Hal to give Jamie the poem and everything that is connected to Siverly.

Jamie realizes that he knows Siverly. As he reads through everything about the destruction of villages in Quebec, he thinks about what the English did to the Scots after Culloden. This is the thing that the English do to get rid of anything that could form a unity against them.

Hal makes it clear that John has no idea Jamie is in London, but he will need to go to Ireland with John. Jamie needs to help get Siverly back. If Jamie doesn’t agree to this, he’ll be sent to the Tower that day and his parole will be revoked. It’s not like Jamie has much of a choice, is it?

Could this chapter be used in a TV adaptation

I would love to see this chapter play out. To see Hal and Jamie face each other again would be beautiful. The last time they really saw each other was at Culloden. I don’t think Hal will have been at Helwater just yet while Jamie was there. So, we have that reminder that Hal repaid the debt on John’s life by saving Jamie.

I would also like to see that Jamie knows Minnie. It would be a little harder to explain how, unless they had enough time for Jamie to say when he last saw Minnie.

The ending is also necessary. We need to see that Jamie knows Siverly, and we need to see Hal give Jamie the order and the threat. It makes it clear that the Siverly situation is important to him, and this isn’t a request of a prisoner. We get to see the different way the Grey brothers deal with the same man.
