Outlander Book Club: Is Jamie Fraser in Lord John and the Scottish Prisoner?

Lord John and the Scottish Prisoner is the next book in our read-through. Of course, with the title The Scottish Prisoner, it brings up questions about a certain Scot in the Outlander series. Does this book include Jamie Fraser?

While the Lord John Grey books are certainly worth reading on their own, there are some fans who aren’t interested in the character. They’ll only read books that Jamie or Claire are featured in, which limits the Lord John books that they will read.

I do think it’s worth reading them all, especially to understand more of John and Hal’s storylines in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. I think we also get to see a different side to some characters, especially when it comes to Jamie as we see him via John’s perspective.

Jamie Fraser is featured prominently in Lord John and the Scottish Prisoner

The Scottish Prisoner does include one Jamie Fraser. In fact, the novel is split between the viewpoints of Jamie and John, giving it more of an Outlander feel compared to the other books about the British officer.

For Jamie, he is still paroled at Helwater. He ends up coming across a Jacobite who is still focused on the cause. However, Jamie is done with politics. It’s not like he even wanted to get involved in the Jacobite rebellion in the first place. Jamie also knows that the Jacobite rebellion is now a lost cause. What’s the point in fighting?

Meanwhile, John ends up with a mission that is going to take him to Ireland. It happens that he could use someone else on that journey, and Jamie is the man to go with him. This is before their friendship grew to what we know it as in the Outlander books, so we get to see how that friendship blossoms.
