It’s time for the duel in The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 32. Jamie is there for John as it starts.

We get to see a real change in the relationship between John and Jamie in this chapter. I think this is the turning point for them. John has come to respect Jamie and want to change the way he treats him, while Jamie has come to be fond of John.

The event of the duel is a huge moment, and we see how that friendship changes.

Breaking down The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 32

It is the morning of the duel. John hasn’t slept, but Tom Byrd has, and Tom is ready to support his employer in the duel. This is comforting for John. He is also comforted by the knowledge that Harry Quarry will be there.

When they get to Lambeth Palace, Harry isn’t there (yet). Instead, Jamie has turned up, and it leads to John asking Jamie to call him by his Christian name. This is something that takes Jamie by surprise, and it certainly shows us the way the relationship has changed.

As Dr. Hunter appears, John worries about it. He doesn’t want his body to be used for one of Hunter’s experiments. I love how in Outlander, Jamie didn’t realize that the Hunters were part of the same family. I guess it’s also easy to overlook if you don’t know too much about history and the fact that this John Hunter is the same uncle of the Hunter siblings. Plus, this Dr. Hunter is based on someone from real history.

I love the blessing that Jamie ends up giving John. It’s one that he has used multiple times, and it shows that Jamie has become fond of John.

As the duel takes place, it’s a tense moment. Twelvetrees is able to get some good shots in, with one doing some serious damage to John’s chest. However, John is able to get in the final, and fatal, blow. He stabs Twelvetrees in the gut.

The chapter ends with Jamie rushing to John’s side, as John cuts off his ability to say that he wants to be taken home.

Could this chapter be used in a TV series adaptation?

If there was going to be an adaptation of The Scottish Prisoner, we would need to see this chapter happen. It’s a huge moment in the overall storyline for John, Jamie, and Twelvetrees. We see this huge shift in the relationship between John and Jamie, and it marks the starting point of the friendship that we know of later on.

This is also huge for the family feud between the Twelvetrees and Grey families. This cannot be over as there is another Twelvetrees brother out there. However, it marks two Greys who have dueled two Twelvetrees brothers, and both the Twelvetrees brothers have been killed in the duels.
