We head back to Glastuig in The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 22. It’s clear that there is trouble for Lord John Grey and company.
John decides to visit Siverly on his own. This is probably a bad idea considering everything that happened before. John also realizes that he is not the only person there.
Twelvetrees is also visiting Siverly. The plot keeps getting thicker.
Breaking down The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 22
Lord John Grey goes to see Siverly, knowing everything that happened to Jamie. He knows that he needs to watch out for what Siverly will do when angry. And this man is quick to anger.
When there, Siverly’s butler let’s John in. He finds that Siverly and Twelvetrees are speaking together and there is a ledger with money out. John offers to come back at another time, but it’s clear that these two men are in cahoots together.
John mentions Carruthers’s name and then Hal’s. Siverly quickly angers and makes it clear that Hal has no right to question him. Really? It’s clear that Siverly has something to hide. He even takes the paper that John has given him and screws it up.
After Siverly storms off, Twelvetrees warns John not to come back again. John needs to avoid meddling in these affairs, or something will happen to him. This is clearly a threat, and it’s clearly a much bigger conspiracy than John and Jamie likely thought possible at first. John finishes by showing Twelvetrees and saying Carruthers sent it to him. Twelvetrees just storms off.
Could this chapter be used in a TV series?
The chapters of The Scottish Prisoner continue to be important for the plot of the story. This is the part of the book where the plot builds and builds. We get to see who is involved in the Jacobite plot, and who may be being used for money or power.
We continue to see John trying to do the right thing. He’s trying to prevent the Jacobites from growing in numbers again. The problem is family drama comes back up. After all, if Twelvetrees is involved, it makes the situation far more personal than before.
So yes, if there was an adaptation, we would need to see this chapter used.
