Outlander Book Club: The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 20 breakdown
It’s time for Jamie Fraser to see General Siverly in The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 20. However, things don’t go to plan.
It’s clear that Siverly is planning something for the Jacobite cause. He can’t have anyone figuring it out all, and that leads to an altercation. However, Jamie gets a little bit of information. This is one of those chapters that is all about the plot.
Breaking down The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 20
Jamie realizes that the best way to try to get some answers from Siverly about the poem is to look like a rich vulgarian. The thing Jamie needs to hope is that Siverly doesn’t recognize him from Paris.
While in Siverly’s house, he notices a club that has a strange knob on the end. Yes, this is important for the chapter. One thing that the club tells Jamie is that Siverly is a villain.
That view continues when Siverly fails to offer refreshments or a seat. Jamie gets straight into the poem, leading to Siverly stiffening. That’s when Siverly knows that Jamie isn’t who he says he is, and Jamie makes it clear that a friend has given him this. He also shares that he has shown it to others, which causes alarm for Siverly.
This is where there is trouble. As Jamie goes to take the poem and leave, Siverly takes the club from the wall and attacks Jamie. Fortunately, it only hits Jamie’s shoulder. Jamie is able to get out of the house with the paper, but not with his hat and cloak, and he knows that Tom isn’t going to be happy about that.
Could the chapter be used in a TV adaptation?
This chapter is packed with information that is linked to the plot. It means that if The Scottish Prisoner is used for a TV series then this chapter would need to be used. The whole point that Jamie and John are in Ireland is to get Siverly, and Jamie has the added need to figure out everything to do with the Jacobite rebellion that people still want to bring up.
This chapter also brings a little bit of action. That is something that we need in the show. It brings us a little extra tension. While we know nothing will happen to Jamie on a level that kills him, we still want to see him in a fight and get the upper hand!
