Outlander Book Club: The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 16 breakdown
It doesn’t take long for Lord John Grey to learn that Jamie Fraser has kept something from him in The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 16. This arguably helps to strengthen the bond.
With Tobias Quinn joining Jamie and John, we knew that there would be trouble. Well, it turns out that trouble attempts to strike rather early. I’m glad that we waste no time in seeing some secrets revealed.
What does this mean for John and Jamie? It certainly seems to strengthen their trust in one another. Well, at least John’s trust in Jamie.
Breaking down The Scottish Prisoner Chapter 16
The chapter starts with Lord John Grey waking up in the middle of the night. The trio of men had stopped at the Tower House overnight. When he wakes, he can hear Jamie and Quinn arguing about something, so John decides to get closer to them to hear what they’re saying.
John finds out that Quinn was trying to kill him, but Jamie prevented that from happening. John now hears that Jamie and Quinn saw each other in London, and it’s clear that there is another attempt to raise the Jacobites. John does hear that Jamie wants nothing to do with this plot or the plot to kill John, though.
Of course, John is now concerned. He needs to watch out for Quinn attempting to kill him! It’s good for him to know that Jamie is on his side, though.
The next day, he decides to send Quinn ahead so that he can talk to Jamie. John tells Jamie of everything that he heard, and he wants to know if this will hinder the mission to bring Siverly in to be court martialed. Jamie doesn’t answer the way John would like, making it clear that John will do what needs to be done. He will too.
Could this chapter be used in a TV series adaptation?
If The Scottish Prisoner is every adapted, I’m sure we’d see this chapter used. I would love to see more of the conversation between Jamie and Quinn play out, and then we get to see that John saw it all. I could actually see this playing out from Jamie and Quinn’s perspective and that we see John in the background listening in. It would be more dramatic for the viewer.
This is a huge part of the plot. John sees that Jamie isn’t all that interested in joining Quinn, and he knows that he can trust Jamie not to kill him in the night. It’s important to understand more of Jamie and John’s relationship.
